Many tourists who plan to visit the northern most state of India, Jammu and Kashmir, begin their journey by stopping at Srinagar first, the capital city of the state. Many then continue on to other tourist destinations such as Sonmarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam.

Srinagar is a city which is known for the picturesque lakes. The notable lakes are the Dal Lake, the Nagin lake where one can experience boat rides and even stay in houseboats. Staying in a house boat is a unique experience that is available only in such settings in Kashmir; the quant rooms well furnished the Kashmiri way provides one with a unique holiday experience unlike any other place in India.

Srinagar to Pahalgam The other places to visit in Srinagar are the Nehru Park, the Shankaracharya temple located at the highest point of Srinagar, the Mughal gardens such as Chashmeshai, Shalimar, Nishat, the Hazratbal Mosque or the temple ruins at Avantipur. One can also take boat rides in the beautiful lakes in boats known as the shikharas while admiring the surrounding countryside; the glittering lights of the town in the evening by the lakes provides a beautiful view, especially by moonlight on clear nights. There are many handicrafts and local handloom industries in and around Srinagar and hence, one can find numerous handicraft shops to shop from in the boulevard area.

For those who are traveling from Srinagar to Pahalgam, the distance is 95 to 100 km by road. There are numerous buses and taxi services available to take one from Srinagar to Pahalgam. There is the Tourist Reception Centre in Srinagar from where one can not only book taxis or buses to Pahalgam, but can also purchase airline tickets, make hotel reservations at different tourist destinations in the state, make houseboat bookings and so forth.

When one is traveling by road from Srinagar to Pahalgam, there is the National Highway 1-A which connects Srinagar with Jammu. Then one will come across the famous Jawahar Tunnel connecting Jammu with the main Kashmir valley and from Quazikund, one needs to take a detour to Anantnag to get to Pahalgam.

Once one reaches Pahalgam, one can make reservations at any of the many hotels and resorts to be found there. There are many activities to partake here such as trekking, rafting, pony riding, golf as well as places to see such as the Baisaran meadow, the Tulian lake, the Shiva temple at Mamaleshwara amongst others.
