Pahalgam is a hill resort in Kashmir which is located at the confluence of the rivers, Aru and Sheshnag. It is located in a valley surrounded by mountains green with fir and pine forests above which soar the snow covered peaks. The Lidder river runs through the town and divides the town into two distinct parts. There are many picturesque places for sightseeing in and around Pahalgam and also short distance from the town.

This town is a popular place with tourists since the temperature here, especially during summers, is cooler and more temperate than places like Gulmarg. The winter months see snow covered valleys here where winter sports like skiing are popular. Many Hindus stop by this popular hill resort on their way to Amarnath. Again, those who are looking for adventure travel and outdoor activities like trekking, camping, can find many hiking routes from Pahalgam and accommodation for trekkers in the form of huts and tents made available by JKTDC.

Activities in Pahalgam For those who are interested in outdoor activities, there are many activities that one can do in Pahalgam. Since most of the sightseeing places are inaccessible by motorable roads, one needs to hire ponies or go trekking to visit these places. Thus, horse riding, trekking, fishing, golf are some of the outdoor activities common in Pahalgam. In the winter, one can take part in winter sports such as ice hockey, ice skating or cross country skiing. The Pahalgam golf course is situated at an altitude of 2400 meters above sea level and it is a 9 hole golf course. This unique golf course is an attraction for many tourists who can hire golf equipments and play golf at this course.

For those interested in adventure travel, there are many trekking routes in and around or from Pahalgam. The village of Mamaleswara is known for the ruins of a Shiva temple which is said to date back to the 12th century. Located at a distance of one kilometer downstream, it is a great walk or short trek for tourists. There is another picturesque place called the Baisaran for having an excellent view of the valley and the surrounding mountainsides. The lush meadow is located higher up the mountains, at a distance of 5 km, a distance that needs to be traveled by ponies. Further up, at a height of 3353 m, there is the Tulian Lake which is usually covered with ice and has majestic mountains surrounding it. These are excellent trekking or pony riding routes since the roads are inaccessible by motorized vehicles.
