This is one of the popular hill stations in Kashmir which has amiable climate during summer and not extremes in temperature such as Gulmarg which makes it easier for the city travellers to adjust to the weather here.

A valley town tucked away amongst mountains which house dense forests of pine, deodar, cedar and snow capped peaks, this town is located at the confluence of the two mountain rivers, Aru and Sheshnag. The Lidder river runs through the town whose name locally means the valley of the shepherds. This hill station was originally discovered by pilgrims on their way to Amarnath. Today, this charming hill station located at a height of 2130 m above sea level is known not only for treks and leisurely holidays, but also for adventure sports and different types of recreations away from city life.

The meadow at Baisaran located at 5 km upstream from Pahalgam is a great place to see breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the valley below. This place is usually reached by trekking or hiring ponies. Further up, at a distance of 11 km above Pahalgam, there is the Tulian lake. The main attraction of this lake is that, the water remains frozen throughout the year and is surrounded by mountains, providing a spectacular view.

The nearby place to Pahalgam which is a must visit is the Mamaleshwara. Located at a distance of 1 km from the town of Pahalgam, this place houses a Shiva temple and a square stone tank. This temple is known to have been built in the 12th century and is popularly visited by tourists. The village of Aru at a distance of 11 km is a nice day tour which can prove to be a day long excursion by trekking or by pony. There are many other places one can visit from Pahalgam. Chandanwari at a distance of 16 km, is considered one of the entry points to Amarnath. Panchtarni is a confluence point of five rivers and is a popular camping site. Hajan is another idyllic spot which falls on the way to Chandanwari and can be a great spot for picnics.
