Pahalgam is one of the popular hill resorts in the valley of Kashmir. Located at a lower altitude than Gulmarg, this town does not have drastic drops of temperature at night and hence, offers a more amiable climate to tourists. The beautiful Lidder river runs though the town, adding to the beauty of the valley.

The town of shepherds as it means in the local language, Pahalgam has many places of natural and historic beauty for tourists to see. There are many hotels and lodges as per varying budgets of travelers and even the JKTDC offers romantic, furnished rooms and huts whereby one can have a delightful stay in this town.

There are many places worth sightseeing in Pahalgam, many of which are short distances from the town and can be covered while trekking or riding on a pony. This is a preferred mode of transport for most travelers and one will find pony fares at different points throughout the town.

Sight Seeing and Excursions in Pahalgam Mamaleshwara is a popular destination which is located a kilometer downstream from the town. Situated on the opposite side of the Lidder river, this site is thought to have originated during the rule of King Jayasima as early as the 12th century.

Baisaran is a meadow located 150 m higher than the town and offers breathtaking views of the town as well as the Lidder valley. The snow clad mountains and pine forests makes this meadow a must visit for all tourists who come to Pahalgam.

If you go beyond the Baisaran meadow, about 1200 m higher up in the mountains is the Tulian lake which remains covered in ice most of the year. The mountains rising from the ice filled lake makes for unique, breathtaking views. One can trek up this path by ponies hired from the town.

One can even take a day walk to the village of Aru, located about 11 km upstream from Pahalgam. This village is full of shepherd families living in their log huts tending to flocks of sheep and goats, which they drive to pastures on higher grounds. Hajan is a popular place for picnics and it falls on the way to Chandanwari, one of the entry points to Amarnath Yatra.

Excursions of greater distance from Pahalgam which are major tours and attractions of this place include the various Mughal gardens which one will see on the way from and to Pahalgam. Pampore is another place to visit which is known as the centre of the saffron industry in Kashmir; Avantipur has the ruins of two Hindu temples while the Sangam is a place to visit to see the local cricket bat manufacturing units.
